Incredible Merida

This is a traditional church located not far from Merida, the latter being Venezuela's headquarter for international tourism. Beautifully located in the Andes, the town has a relaxing atmosphere with lots of partying going on. People were very friendly and spoke intelligible Spanish, and the prices in Merida are also the cheapest in all of country. In addition to going on a trip to Los Llanos from Merida, I went on a trip to the small mountain village of Los Nevados. Getting there is easy, and includes taking the world's longest rope way.  The trip also provides splendid views of Pico Bolivar (picture) and other beautiful mountains.

Los Nevados only got electricity a few years ago, but was still more developed than some places I visited in the Philippines.  It is about a five hour walk from where one gets off the telerifico (rope way), and spending one night there is highly recommended. The isolation has made some of the locals crazy, and observing the village activity was better than watching Monty Python. The main street in Los Nevados was one of the steepest streets I have ever seen, but since there really is not anything on either side of the street, walking up and down it really does not make much sense. I just had to include a picture of a really charming kid who was extremely interested in telling us about the area. Sitting behind him is Siri, a Norwegian girl travelling with her boyfriend, Espen. Additionally, I enjoyed the company of Klaudie, Pius and David. The trip back down to Merida is done by car, but be warned; It is a near-death-experience!
