Beijing-Paris

Summer 99

The Great Wall is just amazing. Even though I don`t see many reasons why anyone should bother going to China; this is a huge one. It is possible to see the Great Wall many places in China, but it especially makes for a great day trip from Beijing.
Adam on the Wall
Adam, as Marx, on top of the Wall
One day in Beijing, a nice fellow approached me and asked if we were interested in seeing some pictures. I was dumb enough to say yes, and half an hour later I was standing there with a picture that cost more than the GDP of China. I guess it is a basic rule in foreign countries never to trust people who are nice. Try not to trust people who are not nice either though!
Getting fooled - again
Dishonest Chinese guy fools Jan, but still Jan gets a nice picture.....
In Beijing, be sure to stop by Hotel Beijing to use the toilets there. They are great! Even more importantly; hundreds of people were killed outside the hotel during the 1989 democracy demonstrations. The infamous photos of the guy with the shopping bags stopping the tanx were for instance taken from the hotel. Hopefully the Chinese people will soon rise up for their rights again. Until that happens, my hope is that more Western governments start recognising Taiwan`s existence.

Tomo, Adam and Yuske taking a bus
Tomo, Adam and Yuske
Taking buses is something we somehow got used to, but never really learned to enjoy. Yet two good Japanese friends we met in Beijing can be seen on the picture; Yuske and Tomo. I still meet up with them once in a while when I am in Tokyo.

Taking the train and going to Europe!
