South-Korea - Part One |
|
![]() (Dave, Nylon, Joobyung, Jooyeon, Dan, Jan) First of all, my short trip to Korea (March 14-17 2002) was made a great success thanks to Jooyeon and her excellent friends. Dan and Dave, two friends from Wharton, came to visit me in Japan for a few days, and we consequently decided to check out what South-Korea is like. . |
![]() Dave, Dan, Jooyeon, Jan (seeing North-Korea) Jooyeon took us on a drive to visit the Odusan Unification Observatory, which is located close to the North-Korean border. Listening to the North-Korea propaganda blasting from loudspeakers was pretty entertaining (though we understood absolutely nothing), and we managed to spot a few North-Korean farmers in the distance. |
![]() Being Indoctrinated Although both Dan and Dave have been more exposed to modern economic thinking than I have, we certainly all have a lot to learn from Kim Jung Il. We were therefore excited to visit this recreation of a North-Korean classroom. |
![]() Eyeing North-Korea Okay, here we are looking at North-Korea farmers. It certainly was eerie to think of the people starving on the other side of the border, particularly imagining how happy they would be to get a free Janhoo email account. |
![]() We like eating We really enjoyed Korean food, and also the company of Heejin who joined us for this picture. It probably is possible, however, to get tired of kimchi. The latter is served with every single meal, and something has to be really good for that not to get old. |
![]() Getting a haircut For no apparent reason, I once read "Korea's Place in the Sun", which is a great book on Korean history. Dan and Dave, however, did not come as well prepared. Thus, after some debate, we decided that the best way to experience Korean culture would be to get a haircut. Pani, standing next to me, did not really give me much of a haircut, but she is still the prettiest barber ever to cut my hair. |
