Leann and Richard

I found out pretty fast that I would be the only foreign student in Fukaya High School. But luckily there was a foreign teacher there as well. That was Leann Carlin.

The first thing I asked her was: "Do you like it here in Japan". She looked at me for a few seconds... I could really see she was thinking of what to say.... "Well" she stuttered, "some things are good and some things are bad".

It didn't take me long to find out that it was an understatement in Japan's disfavour. Leann taught me how to survive in a Japanese high school, too bad I didn't manage to follow all her advises.

Richard was the organiser. Without him there wouldn't have been much fun in Fukaya (after he went there wasn't). Basketball games at Big Turtle, parties... They all come through tnxs to Richard.

They lived together in an apartment two minutes walk from my house. There I could also drop by to find other foreigners or to borrow real TV-programs. July 1996, for some odd reason, Richard and Leann had gotten enough of Japan. Therefore they travelled to North-America for then to go down to the continent below. After a few months they went up to North-America again and went on to Europe after a few weeks. Now they should be in Britain somewhere... But who knows? I wouldn't expect them to get back to their native New Zealand (some island around Australia somewhere) in the foreseeable future.
