- Finding Flies in my Breakfast Cereal

The mystery started a random day in September when tiny flies started appearing in my apartment. They looked like fruit flies, but not having any fruit in my apartment, I found that hard to believe. Therefore, I decided that the flies must have come in through the window. Since I have a small garden outside, this would be plausible, though not likely. I locked the windows, and frantically started killing flies for the next few days. At one point, I was convinced I had killed every fly in my living room, but when I returned to the room about 30 minutes later, a new set of flies had appeared.. My girlfriend came to help me hunt flies one night, and she decided that the flies had to come from the garbage. This sounded odd, as the flies did not appear to gather around the trash, but due to a lack of alternatives I agreed. After having thrown away all the trash in my apartment, of which there was not much as I do not cook, I cleaned the entire apartment. Having read on the internet that flies can leave eggs basically anywhere, my hope was that an apartment without food and eggs would eventually kill the flies. Unfortunately, the flies continued to fly around stronger than ever.

The mystery was finally solved one evening when I decided to check every item in my living room to find the nest. While I had previously checked my other cereal boxes for flies (as they contained fruit), I had not bothered to check my Weetabix carton. However, when I finally got around to checking the Weetabix, I was shocked to find a bunch of flies lying around enjoying life. With an expiration date of June, 2007, I had not expected my Weetabix to turn into a fly nest almost one year prior to expiry. I will comment in my blog on why I think the flies were included in my Weetabix package when I bought it! This page shows the correspondence I had with Weetabix concerning this.
