Yokosuka - American Base in Kanagawa!
- August, Kanagawa Prefecture, 2003

A couple of times a year or so, the American army bases in Japan open up to the public.  I had never been to one of these events before, thus I decided to visit when the Yokosuka Navy Base had its Friendship Day in August. In addition to Yuka and myself, thousands of Japanese visitors had found their way to the base.  The most popular attraction appeared to be American pizza, but it is also fun to look at all the fat Americans.

I was impressed by the sheer size of the base, which contains everything from a baseball court, a cinema, a bowling hall, and a gym.  However, I assume living on the base must get very boring after some time. From what I understand, the Marines are not exactly the Einsteins of the American army.  Anyone who has the opportunity to see them in action outside their cages, say for example in Roppongi, will probably concur.  However, they get my full respect for the job they do.

Here is a picture of various American cars on display.  They are fun to look at, but everyone knows that Europeans and Americans make crappy cars compared to the Japanese. The evening in Yokosuka ended with a magnificent fireworks display.  Not incidentally, the Navy base's Friendship Day occurs simultaneously with the city of Yokosuka's summer festival.  Overall, I greatly enjoyed the visit.  Perhaps I'll be back for some more tacos next year.
