Jan visits Kochi Prefecture - Shikoku, Japan!

Shikoku - Japan's Forth Largest Island!
- Kochi Prefecture (July, 2003)

Part 1 Part 2

Another picture of a random bridge crossing the river. A final picture from the boat.

From Nakamura, we went to the countryside to get closer to the ocean. Another nice picture of the Japan sea.  This is close to Shimoda by the Pacific Sea.

While this picture did not come out too great, the view of the sunset was magnificent.  Overall, Shikoku makes for an excellent holiday destination, and is much more relaxing than Tokyo. We were very impressed by this campground situated just by the ocean.  The beach, however, was quite a hike away and not very attractive.

Before returning to Tokyo, we visited Kochi-jo, which history dates back to the 14th century.  While it never was a very important castle historically speaking, it is a real survivor that has not been reconstructed since 1753. The view from the castle is not bad, but it is sad to see how little of Japan's ancient buildings and history that has been protected.

We were pleasantly surprised to be offered a free volunteer guide to walk us through the castle, and it made our visit much more interesting. Sorry, I do not quite know how this ended up as the last picture, but Yuka is here standing in front of Shimanto-gawa.  Although I was only able to see a small part of Shikoku while there, I promise that I'll be back for more.
