Enoshima - Boat Race!
- Kanagawa Prefecture (April 6, 2003)

Part 1 Part 2
This charming cat certainly enjoyed licking himself in front of Buddha, or whatever god this statue is meant to represent. Enoshima is evidently an island (shima means island in Japanese), and is connected to the mainland by a 600 m causeway.  The shrine Enoshima-jinja is situated on top of the island, and the view of the surrounding bay can be quite spectacular.

Here is one of the entrances to the shrine.  Rather curiously, one has the option of taking an actual escalator to the top of the island.  There is thus not really any need to do any walking. Enoshima is somehow famous for its many cats, and these two pals taking a rest underneath a car were particularly charming.

A picture of the yacht club, with the Norwegian and Japanese flags enjoying the great weather. Finally, the day ended with an incredible sunset over Mount Fuji.

"We had one fine sunset--a rich carmine flush that suffused the western sky and cast a ruddy glow far over the sea. Fine sunsets seem to be rare in this part of the world--or at least, striking ones. They are soft, sensuous, lovely --they are exquisite, refined, effeminate, but we have seen no sunsets here yet like the gorgeous conflagrations that flame in the track of the sinking sun in our high northern latitudes".
