Enoshima - Boat Race!
- Kanagawa Prefecture (April 6, 2003)

Part 1 Part 2
Enoshima is located seventy kilometers west of Kamakura, and makes for a very pleasant trip away from Tokyo.  The weather was absolutely gorgeous the day we went, and we enjoyed splendid views of Mount Fuji to the north-west. Through being a member of the Norwegian Chamber of Commerce, I was invited to watch a boat race.  The Norwegian king apparently won a race during the Tokyo Olympics back in the 1960s, and the yacht club in Enoshima is trying to develop a relationship with Norway upon this foundation.

Since I was a little late for the race in the morning, we were taken by a speedboat out to the other yachts.   This was one of Yuka's first experiences going out sailing, and she could not have picked a better day to do it.

Although the weather was great for watching the sailboats, the wind probably was a bit too light for the sailors. If you enlarge this picture, you will probably understand why Mount Fuji has inspired such a large number of painters and artists.

It is not every day one gets to see sailboats with Norwegian flags sail past Mount Fuji.  I guess many Japanese onlookers were worried they were being invaded by Norwegian socialists and tax mongers.  Luckily, that did not happen.  Cats used to be treated like gods in Egypt, but as we know, the country's inhabitants have since then turned to an even nuttier religion.  This cat, however, probably would not mind having a cat-religion installed in Japan.
